History
Bethel No. 33 of Excelsior Springs was instituted August 27, 1949 through the efforts of “Mother” Aileen Card, Past Grand Guardian and Chairman of Promotion; Mrs. Grace Francis, Past Bethel Guardian of Bethel No. 7, who became the Charter Bethel Guardian of Bethel No. 33 and Mr. John Whitehead, who became the Charter Associate Bethel Guardian of Bethel No. 33. We were chartered on March 15, 1950 with Glenna Hartley as the  first Honored Queen.

The Council was installed by “Mother” Card. The 31 new members were initiated by Bethel No. 29 with Norma Traylor as Honored Queen and the 38 Officers and Choir installed into office by Dayleen Whitehead, Past Honored Queen of Bethel No. 7 and other Installing Officers from Bethel No. 7 and No. 29.

The Grand Guardian was “Mother” Martha Gatzert and the Associate Bethel Guardian was “Dad” Herman Kost.

The Honored Queen’s pin was presented by Dayleen Whitehead at the Institution and the princess pins were presented by “Mother” Muriel Ottman, Past Grand Guardian, on November 4, 1950. The first set of crowns were presented by “Mother” Lois Barker, Past Bethel Guardian of Bethel No. 7, on October 15, 1949.

The Bethel met on the first and third Saturday of each month at Elmwood Odd Fellows Hall, from August 27, 1949 until January 20, 1951. At that time the meetings were changed to the first and third Tuesdays. The Bethel moved from Elmwood Hall to the Northeast Masonic Temple during October of 1959. In May 1978, they moved to the First United Methodist Church in North Kansas City, Missouri and since May 1983, the Bethel has met at the Alpha Masonic Temple on the first and third Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m.

In September 1953, the first Friendship night was held. Louise Borchers (Charter Member) conceived the idea “because we were the youngest Bethel in the area and rarely had visitors.” She thought if area Bethels were invited to fill the chairs, they would have to come and visit. Every Bethel in the Kansas City area attended including Bethel No. 20 and No. 24 which met on the same night.

The first area Bethel dance was held near Valentines day in 1954. Cara Lee Taylor (Charter Member) was the Queen of the dance. The Queen was chosen by the Bethel that sold the most tickets. This was a fore-runner to the Thanksgiving Ball which was originally the Ways & Means to bring Supreme Session to Kansas City in 1957. Cara Taylor Irvin also served as Bethel Guardian of Bethel No. 37 from 1965 to 1968.

In May of 1956, Bethel No. 33 started a Drill Team. It was the second team in the Kansas City area and Missouri to be started. Bethel No. 29 was the first. Our first Drill Team competition at Supreme Session was in 1957 in Kansas City. We won a cup. At Supreme Session in Phoenix in 1958, we won first place in our division and at Supreme Session in 1959, we won a third place trophy. Our Drill Team Captains were: Nancy Cross, Carole Lovan and Lynne Hons. Fred Hons was the Drill Master.

Loretta Farmer, Mom Francis assisted Ruth Mary Leavitt, Past Supreme Guardian, in starting the KCJD Line Club. Loretta was the first President of the Kansas City Area Job’s Daughters Line Officers Club and was also Grand Bethel Junior Princess in 1958.

The Bethel Bible was recovered in memory of Mary Lou Summers Hohenberg. A new American Flag with an engraved plate attached was presented in memory of Betty Kern Carra.

In January 1985, the Bethel started a Clown Unit. The unit performed in area parades and at hospitals and nursing homes. They competed in the Clown Competition held at Supreme Session in Rapid City, South Dakota in August 1985.

The Bethel song to the tune of “True Love” was written in 1963 by Barbara Ann Bisby, Past Princess.

We have four Past Grands: “Mom” Frakes served as Grand Guardian 1981-82, Grand Bethel Guardian in 1984-86 and was the first elected sponsor of KCJD Line Club. “Dad” Sanders was Associate Grand Guardian 1988-89 and Associate Grand Bethel Guardian 1992-93, Dad Bill Perry was Associate Grand Guardian in 2001-2002 and Dad Dennis Flanery was Associate Grand Guardian in 2006-2007.

We have one Past Supreme: In August 1989, “Mom” Marlene Frakes, was elected to the line for the Supreme Guardian Council. She served as Supreme Guardian from August 1992 to August 1993. Supreme Session was held in Kansas City, Missouri in August 1993.

In July of 1997, Bethel #52 merged with Bethel #33. At that time the Bethel meeting nights were changed to the 2nd and 4th Wednesday. With the merger of the two Bethels, we start new history “Building a Stronger Link for Job’s Daughters”. At the merger ceremony on August 4, 1996, the two charters were linked together by Mom Barbara Bauer Perry, Charter Member of Bethel #33 and Mom Mary Youngblood, Charter Guardian of Bethel #52. A special Bible Ceremony was held in June of 1997. Mom Barbara Perry BG #33 retired the original Bethel #33 bible and Mom Carolyn Brasfield PBG #52 retired the Bethel #52 bible. A new bible was presented by PSG Mom Marlene Frakes in honor of the Charter Guardian of Bethel #33 Mom Grace Francis and the Charter Guardian of Bethel #52 Mom Mary Youngblood.

On March 7, 2001, Bethel #42 merged with Bethel #33.  Bethel #42’s Charter was added to the link.  Mom Linda Mosby, PHQ #42 & PBG #42 was Grand Guardian 1996-1997.
